1958
–The Marian Library is born
In 1958 priority was given to developing a more spacious library.Three classrooms were combined, and
the space was furnished with new book cases and individual working tables for
the students. It was a great step forward for the school as Michaelians became
avid readers and thinkers.
The Marian Library was not only the crucible of the reading culture
that pervaded St Michael’s but it was also the scene of extensive literary
activities including debates.Special mention will need to be made of a long
tradition of Library Masters among them Mr Ng Kwee Lam and Mrs Tan Khah Chuan
whose leadership was central to the success of the reading culture at St
Michael’s. The library was also the venue of many inter-class and inter-school
debates. In the 1960s, students
frequently returned to the Marian Library after 7pm to participate in
the lively debating tradition that continues to this day. Among the famous
debators whose oratorical skills were honed in the Marian Library were Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, Mr Patrick Teoh
and Mr Louis Rozario Doss..............
