Shared Leadership evolves further.....
  ..The Moderators make their mark....

It was in 1964 that the Moderator system was  introduced: a teacher was appointed as Moderator  for each form, whose task it would be  to regulate the life of the form, both in studies and in extra curricular activities. The system was a success from the  outset, and has remained popular with staff and students alike, largely because of the wisdom and effectiveness  of those selected for the task.

1958 –The Marian Library is born
In 1958 priority was given  to developing a more spacious  library.Three classrooms were combined, and the space was furnished with new book cases and individual working tables for the students. It was a great step forward for the school as Michaelians became avid readers and thinkers.

The Marian Library was  not only the crucible of the reading culture that pervaded St Michael’s but it was also the scene of extensive literary activities including debates.Special mention will need to be made of a long tradition of Library Masters among them Mr Ng Kwee Lam and Mrs Tan Khah Chuan whose leadership was central to the success of the reading culture at St Michael’s. The library was also the venue of many inter-class and inter-school debates. In the 1960s, students  frequently returned to the Marian Library after 7pm to participate in the lively debating tradition that continues to this day. Among the famous debators whose oratorical skills were honed in the Marian Library were  Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, Mr Patrick Teoh and  Mr Louis Rozario Doss..............

Mr Yong Man Fong takes the Science Department to Greater Heights.......

When Mr Yong Man Fong  joined the Science Staff  in 1956, the science department, already the pride of  SMI under Mr Lee Guan Meng, further enhanced the importance  of science by setting up  the Science and Maths Society  which in turn undertook annual science exhibitions which were events highly regarded  among the schools in Ipoh.
An annual science magazine – THE EXPLORER – was also produced , and this gave many students an opportunity  to present their views  as well as the fruits of their personal   reading and observation.

Mr Yong Man Fong inaugurated the Perak  inter-school Form Five Maths competitions, which has continued in high popularity and profile ever since.

The Drama Tradition reaches its Zenith...
SMI stakes its claim to world-class excellence in drama ....

Brother Ultan Paul with His Royal Highness Sultan Azlan Muhibuddin Shah, Sultan of Perak
Brother Paul gave personal  encouragement  to stage productions, which were handled mainly by Brother Vincent, Brother Casimir ,Mr Timothy Chee and Mr Khoo Kay Hock. Among the plays staged in the 1960s were Pygmalion, A Royal Jester, The Magic Key, The King of Sherwood,The Government Inspector, My Fair Lady,Monkey’s Paw, A Battle of Wits,Oklahoma  and St Joan

Brother Casimir Hannon directed many plays in the 1960s and 1970s. Among the most memorable were "The Winslow Boy" (1965) , "St Joan" (1966) and "The Govenment Inspector"(1967)

Brother Paul was a familiar figure at the double bass on many drama occasions.

Mr Eugene Almeida
Teachers joined the students on the stage with great zest and gusto. Michaelians recall with glee the histrionics  of Brother Casimir  as  Professor Higgins, Mr Almeida as Colonel Pickering   and  Mr Khoo Kay Hock as Doolittle (“My Fair Lady”). Another hilarious stage personality was Mr Louis Rodrigues who acted as Patrick Flannigan in “The Magic Key”.

Michaelians salute Mr
Mr Timothy Chee
Timothy Chee for his commitment to the Michaelian drama tradition. He has answered the call of the alma mater for more than six decades  as drama director at St.Michael’s. In conjunction with our 100th Anniversary celebrations, Mr Timothy Chee is directing a play on the Michaelian story........

Mr Khoo Kay Hock

We also salute Mr Khoo Kay Hock, Mrs Tan Khah Chuan, Miss Corrine Mah and Miss Ling Lidi who made heroic efforts to keep the flame of drama strong and alive at St. Michael’s .
Let us also pay a glowing tribute to the vast host of students who nurtured this vibrant tradition over the years.
Our gratitude and admiration is also extended to the School’s Military Band and Chinese Orchestra who have never failed to provide their excellent  musical support for our drama productions

Mr Adrian Tsen
Since the 1990s, the drama tradition has been nurtured by the Old Michaelians' Association under the astute leadership of its president  Mr Adrian Tsen. Over the years, the drama tradition has become synonymous with the Michaelian school development thrust which has added many new infrastructural facets to the school today. Michaelians all over the world have rallied to the call of Mr Adrian Tsen to  respond "to our duty's sweet call."
