1933 – The School Grows in Shared Leadership
Lay Teachers and the Old Michaelians’ Association are poised to take the school forward to greater heights.

MICHAELIANS’
ASSOCIATION
In 1933, the inaugural meeting of
the Old Michaelians’
Association was called and although the exact number of members
enrolled is not known Brother
Director Dositheus thought
it promised to be a success and
would help to keep the Old Boys in touch with the Brothers.

Brother Dositheus was the
founder-president of the Old Boys’ Association
·
An Annual Dinner was held every year thereafter until the Second
World War.
·
The OMA used to challenge
the Georgians to football, hockey, badminton, ping-pong and billiards.

In 1933, there
were eight Brothers and seven lay
masters.
·
Two student
teachers, Cheah Teik Cheung and Teoh Boon Gim,passed their second –year
exams and went on to prepare for their
third year of studies.
·
The word
“retrenchment” now had a serious meaning – two full classes were “retrenched”
in 1934.
·
Only seven
Brothers were allowed to appear on the payroll in 1933 , and in 1934 only
six.

though (the authorities) wanted to
reduce the number of Brothers in favour of lay masters.” – Brother Director

Lay teachers
began to take ever greater responsibility for the development of St Michael’s
.
·
In 1933, the
Old Michaelians’ Association was founded.
